Laid-back and refreshingly under the radar, Sri Lanka’s East
Coast is de昀椀ned by surf culture, barefoot luxury, and small-scale,
design-led properties rather than sprawling resorts. O昀昀ering an
uncrowded and deeply authentic experience, the region comes
into its own between May and October, when dry, sunny days
and calm seas create ideal conditions for slow, restorative travel.
Despite being one of the island’s lesser-known regions, the
East Coast remains a 昀椀rm favorite among those fortunate
enough to have visited. Here, secluded swathes of dazzling
white sands meet crystal-clear waters, and days unfold at an
unhurried pace. Come evening, enjoy private beachside dining
and savor delicious local Tamil cuisine as the sun slowly
sinks below the horizon.
At the heart of the region is charming Trincomalee, a harbor
city surrounded by several of Sri Lanka’s most acclaimed
beaches, including Nilaveli and Marble Beach. Just a mile
o昀昀shore, Pigeon Island Marine National Park o昀昀ers the chance
to snorkel or dive alongside black-tip reef sharks, graceful sea
turtles, and a kaleidoscope of tropical 昀椀sh.
